Read the visible traits
JMA classifies ornamental medaka using multiple traits, including colour, scales, eyes, reflective features, pattern, fins and body form. One name can describe a combination rather than a single colour category.
Miyuki and lame
Miyuki (幹之) is associated with dorsal external shine. Lame (ラメ) describes sparkling scale highlights. Look for a reflective line versus separate points; these features can occur together.
Colour, fins and form
Yang Guifei (楊貴妃) is associated with orange-red colour, while Daruma (ダルマ) describes a short, rounded body. View long fins from the side as well. Observe swimming and feeding in fish with modified forms.
Keep the name and the lineage separate
A shared strain name does not verify shared parents. Keep the received name, observed traits and confirmed parentage in separate fields. Save consistent photos and leave undocumented ancestry unknown.
