Look at the whole system

Record how many fish are affected, when it began and any recent feeding, maintenance or introductions. Check temperature, water quality and equipment. A short video before disturbing the fish preserves useful behaviour details.

Weight loss has different causes

“Wasting” describes a sign, not a confirmed single pathogen. Review food access, actual consumption, body condition and husbandry history. Increasing food without checking intake may only increase leftovers.

Collect evidence before treatment

Use a prepared, suitable observation container if separation is needed. Avoid guessed medicine combinations or untracked changes. Severe, spreading signs or deaths warrant prompt advice from an aquatic veterinarian, with photos and water results.

Keep a traceable care record

Write the date, signs, action and subsequent response. Keep earlier photos, including imperfect ones: they may show when a change began. A chronological record is more useful than a list of treatments from memory.
