Understand the waste pathway
Waste and uneaten food contribute to ammonia. Nitrifying microbes convert ammonia to nitrite and then nitrate. Establishing this community takes time, and accumulated substances still need removal through maintenance.
Keep a useful water log
Track ammonia and nitrite, plus pH and temperature. Follow the test instructions. Record the time and recent maintenance alongside the result so you can compare trends, rather than relying on one measurement.
Reduce abrupt changes
Condition replacement water and keep temperatures close. Remove debris and use partial changes appropriate to the system. Avoid routinely emptying and scrubbing everything at once. A water-quality emergency needs separate assessment.
Top-ups are not water changes
A top-up replaces evaporated water without removing accumulated waste. Record top-ups separately from partial water changes so that restoring the waterline does not quietly replace maintenance.
